8pm Film Screening: Occupation 101 (projected on the big screen)

http://www.occupation101.com/

A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.

The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.

Next Al-Nakba Meeting

Since the Palestinian elections of 2006, many of us have watched with great dismay the latest methods of Israeli oppression. Currently, Palestinians in Gaza are being deprived of food, fuel, medicines and other basic necessities by an economic embargo imposed by Israel and backed by the U.S. Meanwhile, more Israeli settlements, roads, walls and checkpoints are being set up in the West Bank each day. Very few people believe any progress will come out of the Annapolis meetings. Palestinian, Arab and Muslim communities here in the U.S. are being subjected to a war of racist repression and also need our support.

With the 60th anniversary of al-Nakba -- the Palestinian catastrophe -- coming up on May 15, 2008, a group of local Philadelphia-area activists has formed a committee to organize a series of events and activities to commemorate this date. We have adopted the name the al Nakba Committee.

We are seeking other groups and individuals to join this ad hoc coalition in order to broaden participation and enlarge the overall program. If you share a deep concern for the human rights of Palestinians and feel outraged by the brutality and injustice of the Israeli government, please join us. Our goal is to counter the dishonesty and deception here in the US concerning the conflict and add our voice to the growing volume of dissent.

We think it's important to connect injustices here in Philadelphia to those in Palestine and are excited to stretch the limits of solidarity in the 60 days before May 15. The millions of Philadelphia tax dollars going to support the illegal and unjust occupation of Palestine by Israel is literally at the expense of quality education and accessible healthcare for Philadelphians. In the globalized world, war and human rights violations abroad are intimately linked to injustice at home. Together we can expose these connections.

Some ideas that we and others have discussed:

1) A 2 or 3 day teaching and discussion group event, possibly in March 2008.

2) A modest Palestinian film festival.

3) The design and production of t-shirts supporting and coinciding with the program.

4) The design and production of banners commemorating Al Nakba and their display on Philadelphia public streets.

5) Sixty days of solidarity activities, with groups choosing their own

day(s) and events or actions.

6) Various ideas for public protests on May 15th.

7) Displays of Palestinian artwork.

No final decisions have been made concerning these activities as we are hoping for and awaiting the input of a larger number of participants. All decisions will be made democratically without undue influence or control by any one group or individual.

We have been holding weekly meetings on Monday evenings at different locations, usually at 6:30 pm. Your time and energy, your commitment, your idealism, your concern for justice and your experience and ideas are very much needed and most welcome.
