A New Blog for a New A-Space

This is a post to introduce you to a new member of the A-Space Community, Danielle Stimpson. Danielle is an amazing, energetic, well-organized volunteer for Books Through Bars who is organizing the next phase of A-Space cleaning, fixing, organizing and beautifying. The A-Space Collective couldn't be any more excited-- or could only be more excited if you volunteered to help, too!

A message from Danielle, and her contact info follows. If you have ideas, energy, money, feedback or donations to contribute you can contact us Danielle directly, or contact us through our myspace page myspace.com/aspacecommunitycenter, or friendster page friendster.com/aspace, email us at a-space(at)defenestrator.org, visit our website at www.the-aspace.org, send us a letter or give us a call (scroll for contact info). Folks who use yahoo messenger can sometimes catch us online-- user name "the_aspace".

Financial contributions can be made by dropping money in the donation jar at the a-space, sending a check made out to "4722 Associations" with A-Space in the memo line to us at 4722 Baltimore Ave, Phila PA 19143, or via credit card or paypal account www.the-aspace.org/donations.

Plan an August or a fall event, check out the calendar on the website and drop in at an event, or come to our open house book sale fundraiser on Saturday July 28 11am to check out or progress and see how you can be involved.

Welcome Danielle!

Message from Danielle:

Hello Everyone!

I have an exciting project, and I cannot do it without your help. I am going to be giving some much needed TLC to a community center in West Philly. It is called The A-Space, it is a collective and land trust that hosts great organizations including:

Books through Bars - which supplies prison inmates with books for everything from GED Prep to Physics to Bibles
The Icarus Project - a radical mental health collective
The Philly Anti-War Forum
and provides a space for numerous other community needs from Day Care to Art Exhibits to Tutoring.
West Philly needs our love and support, and so does this community center that has served as a safe haven of positive change for the last 16 years.
With all of your help, we can transform this wonderful place into an even more promising beacon of tomorrow. With your love, thoughtfulness, and efforts; we can positively shape tomorrow and help all of us see a brighter day.

Here is the wishlist of things needed to make the magic happen. Please keep this list in mind. Anytime you clean out your basement or garage, help a friend move, see things get tossed at your office, peruse Craigslist, or scan the curb on trash night, please think of this list. Save it from the landfill and offer it up to your fellow man!

-Shelves and shelving units of any kind
-Miscellaneous general hardware, i.e. hinges, screws, nails, brackets, washers, nuts, bolts, flanges, table legs
-Bookcases & Cabinetry, all sizes, shapes, and material
-Storage units, bins, & racks of any variety
-Plastic or "Rubbermaid" style storage totes in any and all shapes and sizes. I can wash them out if need be.
-Locks and lock assemblies for cabinets
-Milk Crates, yaffa blocks, and the like
-Scrap Lumber, any and all shapes, sizes, widths
-Manual (hand) Saw
-Scrap Fabrics and notions for making curtains and tablecloths-possibly a sewing machine
-Flooring of any kind, even stick-on tiles or linoleum
-Paint and paint supplies, any color, type, or variety. We will find a use for your old paint-no matter the color!
-Contact paper, especially the "frosted" (semi-opaque) kind
-Office type organizers especially for flyers for events and interests throughout the community. Anything office related can most likely be used.
-Foldable chairs and tables
-ANY other random odds or ends

***Please keep in mind that the space is regularly used as a Day Care Center, and that most items will need to withstand the force of children***

Your time, efforts, and good thoughts are the most valuable commodity. It will be LOVE that changes this space more than anything else ever could. If you are willing, ready, and in any way available to help-please contact me at

Thank you so much!
I'll meet you on the streets-with love and strength-
